Uno de los más destacados creadores cinematográficos del mundo árabe, el director, guionista y actor egipcio Youssef Chahine (1926-2008), será honrado póstumamente con la proyección de una de sus películas restauradas, gracias a los esfuerzos de la Fundación del Festival de Cine del Mar Rojo. Se trata de «Al-Ikhtiyar» (The Choice).
La cinematografía de Egipto es la más desarrollada de toda la región del Medio Oriente. De ahí que en la sección Retrospectiva y Clásicos del festival que comienza el 12 de marzo próximo y que seguirá hasta el 22 de ese mes en la ciudad de Jeddah en Arabia Saudita, se incluya este significativo filme que marca la primera proyección en pantalla grande del trabajo del legendario director en ese país.
El guión del filme fue escrito a cuatro manos entre el director Chahin y el gran escritor egipcio y Premio Nobel de Literatura de 1988, Naguib Mahfouz, y trata sobre el misterioso asesinato de una persona, que se convierte en una inmersión profunda en la psique humana, explorando la conciencia social de Egipto a la luz de la Guerra de los Seis Días. La aparición de un cuerpo sin vida, con una fotografía en su bolsillo, y que resulta ser el cadáver del hermano gemelo de un famoso autor y escalador social, instala desde ese momento, un crudo drásticamente diferente a la vida del escritor.
La película está protagonizada por la «Cenicienta del cine egipcio» y una de las actrices más influyentes de Medio Oriente y el mundo árabe, Souad Hosni junto a la brillante Izzat Al-Alayli, Hoda Sultan, Mahmoud Al-Meliguy y más.
La restauración fue posible gracias a una colaboración única entre el Festival y el Ministerio de Cultura egipcio.
Según informan los organizadores del festival que por primera vez se realiza en la patria de Mahoma, a la proyección asistirá la familia del fallecido director, que es «un pilar central en el programa de 15 Retrospectivas y Clásicos del Festival y es una de las 10 películas restauradas por la Fundación del Festival de Cine del Mar Rojo». El director del festival, Mahmoud Sabbagh, ha comentado que “Es enormemente significativo proyectar la película de Youssef Chahine en Arabia Saudita, especialmente en un momento tan histórico. Es un honor conectar la Fundación del Festival de Cine del Mar Rojo con la herencia del trabajo del difunto maestro y tener la oportunidad de restaurar este trabajo seminal a su máximo esplendor, permitiendo que una nueva generación se encuentre con una de las mejores películas del mundo árabe», aseguró.
Otros filmes restaurados
La Fundación del Festival de Cine del Mar Rojo también ha restaurado dos películas raras del fallecido fotógrafo saudí Safouh Naamani, que se proyectarán en el Festival. Las dos obras del pionero del cine y la fotografía dentro del Reino documentan la historia urbana y social de Arabia Saudita, con un enfoque en La Meca y Jeddah, son la versión restaurada de «La peregrinación a La Meca» (1963), y un especial cortometraje titulado «Jeddah Between 1954–1968», que fue desarrollado y restaurado a partir de una película de 16 mm, para crear un panorama de la ciudad.
La Fundación también ha restaurado otras nueve obras clave del director neorrealista egipcio Khairy Beshara, que se estrenará como parte de una retrospectiva completa del trabajo de Beshara, quien sì está vivo y se espera participe en el festival, dentro de la sección Retrospectiva y Clásicos que fue diseñado especialmente para brindar al público local e internacional la oportunidad de encontrar obras que han moldeado la memoria colectiva.
Red Sea Film Festival Foundation Restores “Al-Ikhtiyar” (“The Choice”) by legendary Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine
The Red Sea Film Festival Foundation has restored Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine’s masterpiece “Al-Ikhtiyar” (The Choice). The murder mystery will screen in the Festival’s Retrospective and Classics section. The event marks the first big screen projection of the legendary director’s work in Saudi Arabia.
Co-scripted by author Naguib Mahfouz, this murder mystery is a deep dive into the human psyche, exploring the social conscience of Egypt in light of the Six-Day War. In it, a body turns up with a photograph in its pocket. The corpse is the twin brother of a famous author and social climber and, from that moment on, the writer’s life takes a drastically different course.
The film stars the «Cinderella of Egyptian cinema» and one of the most influential actresses in the Middle East and the Arab world, Souad Hosni alongside the brilliant Izzat Al-Alayli, Hoda Sultan, Mahmoud Al-Meliguy, and more.
The restoration was possible thanks to a unique collaboration between the Festival and the Egyptian Ministry of Culture.
The screening, which will be attended by the Director’s family, Gaby, Ramzy, and Marianne Khory, is a central pillar in the Festival’s 15-strong Retrospectives & Classics program and is one of 10 films restored by the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation. Festival Director Mahmoud Sabbagh commented: “It is hugely significant to screen Youssef Chahine film in Saudi Arabia, especially at such a historic moment. It is an honor to connect the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation with the heritage of the late master’s work, and to have the opportunity to restore this seminal work to its full glory, allowing a new generation to encounter one of the greatest films from the Arab canon.”
Red Sea Film Festival Foundation has also restored two rare films by late Saudi photographer Safouh Naamani, which will screen at the Festival. The two works from the pioneer of film and photography inside the Kingdom document the urban and social history of Saudi Arabia, with a focus on Mecca and Jeddah, they are the restored version of “The Pilgrimage to Mecca” (1963), and a special short entitled “Jeddah Between 1954–1968,” which was developed and restored from 16 mm film, to create a panorama of the city.
Furthermore in the RETROSPECTIVES section, the Foundation has restored nine key works of by Egyptian neorealist director Khairy Beshara, which will premiere as part of a full retrospective of Beshara’s work.
The Retrospectives and Classics program is specially curated to give local and international audiences the opportunity to encounter works that have shaped collective memory.
